[Gocamino] Peregrino's passport

Hi Gary,

It depends on what route of the Camino you intend to walk. The majority of pilgrims follow the French Camino, and almost 1 in 3 commence walking at Sarria; but even in the French Camino there are nearer places which are about 101 kms. away from Santiago, like Ferreiros (just before Portomarin), If you will follow the Via de la Plata (much nicer, interesting, and far less crowded) you can start out at Ourense which is a lovely place and has two wonderful albergues; one of them has a huge  fully-equipped kitchen wherein food-minded pilgrims exercise their culinary talents; the food there is so valued that many town people patronize the albergue "restaurant"-for a sizable "donativo", of course-.  Ourense also has sulphuric hot-water springs in which pilgrims bathe, or soak their feet to forestall blisters, leg cramps, aches and the like.

The Ourense Cathedral has its own "Portico de Gloria" which is quite impressive.

I would recommend that you get a new pilgrim's credential as you start the pilgrimage.  The official one has changed somewhat and, with some exceptions, it is required for the purposes of obtaining a Compostela.  With the letter from your Parish priest you can obtain it at any church or pilgrims' center. You can go to the (tourist) information office in any major town and they will direct you to the precise spot. Nothing could be simpler.

If you intend to follow another route, such as the Primitive, Nor thern, English or Portuguese Camino, you can=2
0look at the maps available in the internet and gauge the distance.  Should the map information that you download be in Spanish only, I'll be glad to translate it for you if need be.

Hugs!

Rosina
