Hi all,
I'm sorry for not answering sooner, but in coming back to New York? I found a pile of accumulated work, as usual.

Well,?the name of the book, in English, is "I am off, then: Losing and Finding Myself on the Camino de Santiago" by Hape Kerkeling. (This is a direct translation of its name in German; how any book can become? a spectacularly awesome ?seller with such a cumbersome name is beyond me).? At any rate, the book is now available in English in paperback and it costs about 12-14 dollars. You can locate it in Amazon by reference to its author name.

The French movie in DVD is called "Saint Jacques. La Mecque". As it turns out my message misinformed: there is a version, in French, with subtitles in English and it can be purchased through Amazon, but it does cost $52.00,?The one I? bought?in the Spanish bookstore in Vienna cost?11 Euros ($15.00), it is in French with subtitles in English, and it is called, simply,?"Peregrinos".? The version dubbed in German is called "Pilger" and it costs 10 Euros.

A couple of years ago Tracy Saunders, an English-born woman who lived in Canada for 23 years and taught at a university in Toronto (she now makes her home in Spain)? wrote a book called "Pilgrimage to Heresy" inspired by her own pilgrimage to Santiago. The book is fictionally based on a quasi-heresy of a 13th century bishop intertwined with the experiences of a novelized modern pilgrim. It reportedly covers an ancient religious ideological strife and persecution, two love affairs (one tragic) and a modern mystery. Well,?the book has been translated into Spanish and it is being issued in Spain this week in the language of Cervantes.
I have neither the time, nor the inclination, to read fiction books, and excepting some?classics and Jane Austen I ?never do so. Nevertheless, I am curious as to what may have caused?Ms Saunders' book to be translated into Spanish, which is a very rare occurrence with books of this kind, and I may give it a try.

The first time I read Linda Davidson's "The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago", in my first Camino, ?I was totally bowled over by it, and have never read a better book about the Camino ever since? It is beyond compare. Since my first Camino I have spent hours and hours and hours translating parts of it to sundry people all over the Camino: priests, nuns, teachers, bar-tenders, fellow wine-drinkers and diners and all sorts of folk.?There was, and is, a tremendous interest for a version of the book in Spanish. Inquiries made to Linda disclosed that the cost, and contractual obligations with the USA publishers put an edition in Spanish beyond feasibility reach.? What a crying pity!? If I were a good translator (which I am decisively not), I would translate it for free. Maybe some enterprising mind will find a way to make it available at least in?Spanish besides English.

As mentioned, the Camino has become hugely popular not only in Germany, but also in Austria; among the many "Jakobsweg" (Camino) items available in the book and record stores in Vienna they now have those little calendars, whose pages double as book markers, based on the Camino.? They are called "Auf dem Jakobsweg" 2010 and their pages contain beautiful images of the Camino and some related quotations from famous thinkers throughout the centuries (in German, of course). The little things cost 3 Euros ($4.50), are priceless, and presumably can be ordered from the publisher Groh Verlag by going to
www.groh.de
They are labeled Lesezeichen & Kalendar and the isbn is 978-3-86713-300-5
It occurred to me that they'll make wonderful Christmas stocking stuffers.
Hugs!
Rosina
ps. Dave, Kat and Grant, expect one in the mail.?
?
