Thanks Glenn,
I was bitten in France and became a cause for concern.  My French companions thought that I would think ill of their country because they have a few bugs.  I assured them that the charms of France were greater than those few bites.  However, I will run to the store and go into Spain equiped to fight off an army of chinches, punaise, or bedbugs.  (It's amazing the vocabulary we learn on the Camino.)

I used a product by Sawyer's and sprayed it on the exterior of my bag and
pack. At my wife's suggestion, I also took some lavender essential oil to
dab on me before sleeping (it also negated undesirable refugio smells). I had
no problems with the critters in 2007. I don't want this to seem like an
advertisement, but I will include a little write up on the Sawyers product
below. It is not for direct skin contact, only for clothes.

Developed in cooperation with the U.S. Military, government agencies,
universities, and others; this Sawyer Clothing repellent offers protection from
disease-carrying biting insects. The active ingredient, Permethrin, is a
synthetic molecule similar to those found in natural pyrethrum which is taken
from the Chrysanthemum flower. Not only does this product repel insect, but will
actually kill ticks, mosquitoes, chiggers, mites and more than 55 other kinds of
insects. Sawyer Permethrin insect repellents are for use with clothing, tents,
and other gear. A single application lasts 6 washings. Permethrin is odorless
when dry, and during the drying process, it tightly bonds with the fibers of the
treated garment. It will not stain or damage clothing, fabrics, plastics,
finished surfaces, or any of your outdoor gear.

I remember hearing that. Problem for me was that I didn't get the
bugs until Hornillos, where MANY MANY others picked them up also.

At this point, they're a problem everywhere. I have a friend who
manages a Red Lion Hotel here in Portland, and he says they're a
horrible problem even in nice hotels. Also, a girl in my Spanish
class says they also have the problem in school dorms.

Yech! I HATE those little buggers!

Diatomaceous earth is an EXCELLENT idea! I have used it for fleas at
my son's house and it works great. I hadn't thought of it for
chinchas, maybe carrying a small jar isn't a bad idea!
Hmmmmmmmm ::::thinking about how I'd use it on the Camino:::::
