When you go to the site posted below, do click on the picture captioned “Amargura. Vi” (There are two Amarguras, the first one is Amargura Se.) and just listen to that music!.... and do try to do so using your earphones.

My heart is about to burst and there is nothing to do but share with those who may comprehend…… that is, pilgrims.

The centuries-old phenomenon of Holy Week in Seville seems to have a wonderfully simple and natural explanation: we humans are born with an infinite capacity to love which is, one way or another, repressed, or depressed, almost from day one…. Yet…. It is there, and it is manifested extravagantly, and freely in Seville…. the love of Jesus, the lovely God-on-earth  that articulated the essence of love for us and, somehow, even more so, our very human love for Mary….. which comes over one's being in tidal waves, strongly, comforting, and ever so clearly…. like the love that a mother must feel for her child the first time she holds her babe in her arms….  or the clear heart-force of  a babe looking at the mother that holds him/her close to her own throbbing heart.

You feel that in Seville….  watching the images of Mary with the dagger piercing her heart foretold by that angel in the Annunciation……  wanting to help her and ease her pain and  ending up, instead, being reassured and comforted by  her…… over and over and over, as the images of Mary come in the 56 official processions.

A bible-reading Episcopalian sister-in-law of mine, Kathleen, went with me to Seville and took offense at the outpouring of love for Mary. “After all” she said, “it was Jesus that was crucified, not Mary”.  It took but a couple of days for Kitty to feel that Mary would have willingly changed places with Her Son on the Cross, and that she needed to live on to console firts the Apostles and then us.

I, as tens of thousands of others far more eloquent  have attempted to do, could go on and on about it with words. But mere words can never suffice.

Which is why there is music.  Each Seville confraternity has its own composers and its own band, and they pour out “marches” to the images of Jesus and/or Mary in their parishes. If you go to the second Amargura video, the one dedicated to the Virgin, you will hear one of the most astounding of such marches.  The word “Amargura” means, roughly, sorrow.. and the Virgin of Amargure is Our Lady of Sorrows.

Put your earphones on and just listen to that amazing love Pean in sound (keeping in mind that the recording was made through a throng of about fifty thousand people…. But you’ll get the idea.)

And, you know what?  My heart runeth over (which is why, I’m told, it won’t break) and nothing will do but to share this magnificence with, at least,  those of you who have shown me such forebearing affection through this medium.  So, dear, dear Kat, Dave, Ana and Grant, if you manage to get to Seville next Holy Week I’ll get you ring-side chairs for the processions,  and will even hold a dinner at “Los Seises” for your spouses, (if any.)

And for the musically inclined among you, John and Paul, I may even get you close to some of the bands.

Love you lots!

Enjoy the Wonder of Easter!
