Hello you all,
The "Voz de Galicia" carries an eye-catching article entitled " Todas las Iglesias del Camino contaran con una mujer para atender a los Peregrinos" ("All churches in the Camino will have a woman to take care of pilgrims").? The article itself is not as tentalizing as its heading. It merely reports that the Xacobeo manager,? Rodriguez Eguibar, and members of the Lugo Bishpry have put in place a plan to hire oner person for each church of the Camino to assist pilgrims and to take care of the church. The majority of the new hires are women and they will work from now until the end of September.
Specifically, they will assist pilgrims, will open the churches at given hours and will try to prevent damages to the buildings and attempted theft of religious artifacts (a growing problem). The Xacobeo will finance this undertaking.

It should be mentioned that such practices have been in place for many years in the Via de la Plata, particularly in the lovely city of Zamora. The nine eleven-century? churches in Zamora are?open during the day and attended by someone who is paid by the municipal authorities. The attendants that I had a chance to speak with?to be either art/history teachers or graduate students because their knowledge about the churches and their contents was beyond the pale.

In Santiago itself some churches have such attendants.... Alas! the majority do not and seem to be closed most of the time.

Hugs!

Rosina
