Another consensus of the Jaca meeting attendees was that the yellow arrow should continue to be use as the principal pilgrims’ guiding sign on the Camino, not necessarily to replace the previously approved “Vieira Europea “ (European shell) but to fill the void until the time when such shell shall have been  ubiquitously installed and fully recognized by pilgrims.

While the increase in the number of private albergues was necessary and is welcome, its owners are urged to observe every standard of safety and hygiene, and they are asked not to compete with ordinary tourists hostels and pensions, but to accept in their albergues only documented pilgrims whose intention is to undertake the Camino pilgrimage.

The pilgrims’ solidarity exhibited in the successful effort to stop the industrial development in O Pino showed that pilgrims can, and should, protect the Camino and its monuments large and small. All pilgrims can add to the preservation of the Camino by alerting the Federation of Associations of Friends of the Camino of any threats to the Camino’s integrity by actual or planned acts on the part of individuals, businesses or industry.

To increase the pilgrims’ presence and voice on the Camino all Associations of Friends of the Camino, wherever located, are urged to join the Federation of Associations in order to widen the objectives and endeavors of each individual Association through the strength of a unity that will represent the shared purposes.

In other news:

The Iris Flavia Academy has prepared a program for pilgrims who wish to combine their pilgrimage with an opportunity to learn Spanish.  The program includes a qualified Academy teacher and a support van to accompany pilgrims who join the program from O Cebreiro to Santiago.  A portion of each day will be set aside for Spanish lessons that will, from the very beginning, relate to a Camino theme.

The Academy enjoys a sterling reputation in Galicia for its innovative, and successful, academic initiatives, and is seeking certification as a center of Spanish language and culture from the world-renowned  Instituto Cervantes para la lengua espanhola,  which is Spain’s equivalent of the Academie Francaise in the safeguarding of the heritage and purity of the national tongue.

Hugs!
