Hello you all,

Today's "Voz" reports that 51,658 pilgrims had stayed at the public albergues (Xunta/Xacobeo sponsored) from January to May, the slow months, this year on the Camino Frances and that to insure?greater pilgrims' safety and protection the Xunta has contracted for guards that will patrol de Camino beginning on July 13th.
Two security agents, each in his/her own vehicle, will patrol the Camino 24/7 to make sure that all its safe. These guards will be unarmed, but will have all sorts of direct?communication means with the police, the Guardia Civil, etc.? and will perform their functions until next September. Their principal duty will be to protect the tranquility and security of pilgrims.

The "Voz" also has an article about a pilgrim from Switzerland going to Santiago with a donkey.? While this is not unusual, this pilgrim has provided his donkey with leather shoes to protect the donkey's hoofs. There is a nice picture of the donkey in the newspapers and I wish I knew how to copy such things and post them here.?The photo shows another unusual feature: rather than carrying the pilgrim's backpack, etc., on its back the donkey merely pulls a small cart. (Wouldn't you like to know such kind-hearted pilgrim?).

Today's Correo also has an interesting picture:? a mime from Barcelona has outfitted?himself as Santiago and sits in Obradoiro as a "living image" of the Apostle.? While some Santiagoans object to the representation most are amused.? As you know, those immobile mimes are ubiquitous not only in Santiago, but in most of Europe.? Somehow their charm escapes me, although I must admit that the ones in Seville are very imaginative and worthy of admiration.

Perhaps Grant, one of our guru-techies, can make the pictures available here.?

Hugs!

Rosina
