Hello you all,
The Vienese Santiago pilgrims were also participants if the Pilgrims' Ball, together with Lourdes Pilgrims, Fatima Pilgrims, Rome Pilgrims, Loreto Pilgrims (?) and a score of others. Apparently they have a few Balls every year.
While there certainly are night watchmen, night porters, etc., balls, there is no "Bouncer's Ball: in fact, I had a hard time trying to explain what a "bouncer" is. The Vienese are very law-abiding, and they think it a waste of time to behave otherwise. In fact, despite the ubiquitous beer and wine caffees, taverns, and street stands all over the place, I haven't seen a single person that could be called "drunk" in the sense of making trouble. True, there are a few hippie-like characters pretty much under the influence of something that hang out inside the huge Karlsplatz subway station, but they are pretty much under the eye of the social (worker) police, and they do not mess with anyone other than themselves.
As for dancing with blistered feet, last September, after the Camino, I spent a few days in Santiago, The city was full of Italian pilgrims who were joyfully celebrating not only the end of their pilgrimage but also the victory of their country in the Soccer World Cup. They were dancing all over Obradoiro, and one of them was even on crutches!.
Somewhere I have a few pictures of them at it and will send them to Dave for possible posting here.
Since I have to go back to work next Monday (Bah, humbug!) I'll be going home on Sunday and can possibly send the pictures next week.
Meanwhile, for those of you who have asked, so far, here are the 2006 Compostela-recipient pilgrim figures for some specific countries. Again, the (2005) figures are in parenthesis.

South Africa 222 (162)
New Zealand 138 (125)
Japan 282 (278)
Argentina 347 (278)
Finland 408 (272)
Slovakia 198 (174)
Slovania 140 (128)
Venezuela 177 (135)
Colombia 131 (148)
Israel 42 (31)

Hugs from Viena where (thank heavens!) is finally snowing.

Rosina

The idea of a Pilgrim's Ball conjures up images of
footsore scruffy hikers clomping away happily in their
mountain boots to a Viennese waltz!

What a happy idea. I wonder if the security guards
have a "bouncers' ball?"
It's snowing in Sahagun!
