[Gocamino] gocamino is for plain text postings only

It seems to be time to remind gocamino members of one
of the cardinal rules of most mailing lists: only
plain
text items will be acceped. There are several
reasons for this, but one we should all remember is
that the peregrino sticking in a euro coin every half
hour in the public computer in a rural bar with only a
dialup connection would like to be able to keep up
with
gocamino without spending 90c on the Euro to download
photos and html-formatted and office-formatted
documents - the latter which he probably can't read
anyway. And rural peregrinos aren't the only ones
who read gocamino over dialup lines, or who subscribe
to the digest form. Most common mail programs
send messages by default as a combination of
plain and html-formatted text; the mailman software
used by gocamino will discard the html-formatted and
use the plain. But some mail programs only
generate html-formatted text and they can't be used
with gocamino.

There is another issue with posting copyrighted
material such as newspaper articles: it's illegal, and
this is a problem for the mailing list administrator
(me). So don't do that. The way to refer to
copyrighted web material is to send its URL in a
plain text message, along with your own discussion of
it if you like. The way to refer to photos and
documents in office format and large html-formatted
items is to put them on a web
site and mail their URL to the mailing list in a plain
text message. If you don't have a website, you
can use the gocamino library by sending the item to
me directly, not to the gocamino mailing list.

All these issues and more are discussed at the
gocamino website, http://gocamino.oakapple.net
