gocamino Alternatives for backpack

I live in Santa Barbara, California and want to walk the camino with a 
woman friend.

I would prefer to travel independently with one friend and not be part of a 
larger group.  For me this will be a spiritual pilgrimage.

I can no longer wear a backpack.  How can I walk the camino and not carry a 
pack?  Are there pack animals (eg burros)? Can I push something that would 
hold the pack? Are there services that would bring the pack to the next 
stop by car, etc.?

If there is anyone who has used alternative methods to get their gear from 
place to place without wearing it on their back, I'd love to hear from them.
