I'm with Pieter except for some little differences:

1. Good shoes
2. Good socks
2. Good, light backpack
3. Stick
4. Slippers
6. Map or guidebook

The rest can take care of itself ..

You can even live without the map or guidebook if you
choose to. I always have a guidebook because I've
become accustomed to having my trusty El Pais. With
that, I've gotten along without a map.
