Consider taking a bus to Pamplona. In Madrid, right outside the
international airport terminal, you can get a city bus directly 10 minutes
to Plaza de Americas. (The bus stops to the far right of the building as
you face the street. Take the bus marked "Plaza de Colon".) From there (2
levels down) you can get a bus to Pamplona for only 20 Euros. They leave
about every 2 hours during the day. It takes 4 hours to get to Pamplona,
and the bus station is right downtown. There is even a rest stop half way.
There are some hostels near the bus terminal. The Pamplona airport is out
of town, and you have to get a taxi into town. If you want to start from
Roncesvalles, the "pilgrim's bus" leaves the same bus station at 4:00 PM
