Elizabeth and Nancy, I'll add my name to the over 60 list. I walked much of the Via Frances last year  and plan to walk the Plata, from Sevilla to Santiago, this coming April and May. I ran into one lovely French lady who was in her 80's and walking with family. As Rosina says, I feel perfectly free to go to a hostel whenever I want. But I stay in Albuergues too. That is an important part of the experience.
