Wasn't it part of the traditional requirement, to
receive whatever absolution
the pilgrimage offered, to confess and receive the
Eucharist?
Page 61 of Melczer relates how it was in the later
middle ages:
"an all-night wake in the cathedral followed by
confession and Holy
Communion became practically required preparatory
steps for the subsequent
tour of the cathedral and the veneration of the
reliquary tomb of St James"

They are a little less stringent now.
