You probably will spend more money renting a bike than the $70 to $150 for a discount store bike.  Also, you would have to return it to the point of rental.  who wants to go backward?   You can get bke in the luggage compartment of the bus (if the driver is willing) and hop forward.   We took our bikes, still in their shipping cartons, on the bus from Madrid to Pamplona where we started.  There are buses to other major cities from Madrid if you want to start short of Pamplona.   If you want to start at St. Jean or Roncesvalles, check the archives for info on buses fromPamplona,or people with picklup trucks for hire.
