Sir Walter Raleigh and the Camino

Wasn't 1603 the year in which Sir Walter Raleigh was charged and convicted of
treason and atheism? That would seem to account for the Camino-dismissive
tone of the poem. And wasn't he maimed in Cadiz? That would not have endeared him
to anything Spanish.
