Hi Liz,
The Spanish newspapers report that the Spanish Tourism Office is in the
process of issuing a publication called "Camino de Santiago y la Catedral" in five
languages, one of which shall be English.
You'll have no trouble finding maps and guides which are written in Spanish.
French, German and English.
It has been written that of all European peoples Spaniards are the least
likely to speak another language; I find this to be quite true. Nevertheless the
common friendliness and desire to help, together with a dictionary and/or
phrase book should see you along.
Here in New York City, where about one-fourth of the population is
Spanish-speaking, small electronic Spanish/English dictionaries with simple phrases and
pronunciation audio are ubiquitous. They are no bigger, or heavier, than a
small calculator and, reportedly, they are very useful. They cost about $40, I
think. English speaking, monolingual, friends of mine who have gone to
Santiago swear by them.
Regards,
Rosina
