My grandfather and relatives in Germany took me hiking for 5 days straight through the mountains in Austria when I was 12, it sparked my interest in travelling and physical fitness in general! It was one of the best experiences I have ever had.

My son climbed Mt. Whitney - highest in the continental USA - at age 10 with
his dad and grandpa - a total of 22 miles up and down. Don't underestimate
kids! If your grandson is reasonably physically fit and an athlete, I'd
bet he could do it, though we have yet to start our first Camino, so I don't
know the route yet - we're leaving St. Jean Pied de Port on about April 30.

  Good luck,
  Kathy in Mexico
