Berni the Pilgrim Dog

On the highway just before San Anton I came upon a German Shepard (dog) cheerfully trotting back from Castrojeriz towards Hontanas.

I assumed that it was Berni the famed companion of pilgrims but somebody just told me Berni died back in February.

Does anybody have confirmation and, if true, does Berni now have a successor?
