Learning on the Camino

Dave and Jen,
I finished the Camino Frances only just a few weeks ago. We met an American
teacher who was on the Camino with her students. I believe they were from
Texas. In any case, she had about 8 girls with her along with another
instructor (Spanish I think). They had a support vehicle that was basically
ahead of them for emergencies as well as to supply food at rest stops. It
definitely can be done and was. There were also a lot of student groups
from Spain. In fact there was a large group of about 60. Logistically I
would guess a lot more planning has to go into it as the refugios cannot
handle these kinds of numbers. The Spanish student groups stayed elsewhere
usually on gym floors and such.

Prior to the Camino I spent 6 weeks with the University of Calgary on a
Geography field school most of which was located in Spain. I was suggesting
to my professors that the camino would be the perfect field school, full of
history, culture, geography, religion... I wish you luck, because it would
truly be a fantastic learning experience for students.

Greetings Dave! I've been lurking for a month hoping for something similar.
I've actually proposed a travel course at my university for next summer to
take students along the camino. I'd be happy to send you a syllabus and
(when it comes out) a brochure, so that you can demonstrate that it's done.
As for the rest, I'm waiting for suggestions with bated breath!

Greetings-

I'm new to the list. My name is Dave, 25, and from Seattle. I walked
the Camino Frances last May (and my shoulders still remember the
last 100k).

I'm hoping to design a summer program at my school to take a small
group of students along the camino, and am looking for
evaluations/summaries by other educators of similar trips (whether at
the high school or university level) - basically to a) show the school
administration that it has been done before, b) that it has educational
value, and c) to gather some advice/ideas on how to actually pull it off.

Does anyone here have any info along these lines, or suggestions of
places for me to look for it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks-
Dave Whitson
