Hi Dean,

Walking El Camino last summer I met one individual and later a couple who walked "the wrong way". They were all Frenchmen who had also walked to Santiago.
And in St. Jean in 2000 I met a Dutch woman in her late fifties who was walking back to Holland after having done "The Silver Rute" from Sevilla to Santiago.
So, yes, it is possible. It has been done before.
And why not? In days of old people walked from all over Europe to Santiago and back - those who survived, that is. In the summer of 2001 I went to see a gravestone of a 14th century pilgrim, Peder Kæller, who not only walked from Denmark to Santiago and back but also to Jerusalem and back.
Walking to Santiago today one just have to follow the yellow arrows painted on curbs, trees, rocks, houses, etc. Walking in the opposite direction one will just have to walk "against" the arrows. Come to think of it that might turn out to be a bit of a problem, though, as the arrows will be painted on the side facing people walking towards Santiago, and thus easier to miss walking from West to East. Besides you will meet a lot of pilgrims who - with the best of intentions - will do their best to guide you in the right direction.

Have a nice onimac!

Frans.
