The dialogue that has been going on about drinking water today has helped me make up my mind to start in Saint-Jean Pied de Port, rather than Jaca. Thank you for the practical discussion (and humour). I pictured cows standing in the only drinking water for miles, and know it wouldn't be funny, but I had to laugh. :-)

Between Jaca and Puente la Reina (Navarra) on the Ruta Aragonese, it is always best to purchase a liter or two of water whenever one is in a town, as there are rather few towns enroute. In September 2001 it would have been a long dry trek indeed if I had not done so. Between Arres and Ruesta, the Camino does not pass through any place with a fountain or a tienda, and there are very few places to stop on most of the other days. Bob Spenger's advice is well-taken on that route and generally it is a good idea to carry at least a liter of water at all times even on the more populated portions of the Camino from Roncesvalles to Santiago and beyond to Fisterra.
