Watashi wa Amerika kara kimashita.

Yes, in Japan I get away with this because, written
out in romaji (letters), that's how the word is
translated from katakana. Still, I can't imagine how
"I come from America" would play out in continental
Europe where, in some circles, that word applied to
the U.S. sounds an imperialistic alarm.

Interestingly, it seems better to say "I'm American"
than "I'm from America."
