Well, Paul, that's interesting! I lost toenails pretty often in my Vaques also, finally switched off to Dunhams. It was in mountain hiking. I just thought mine were, maybe, short. It doesn't hurt to lose nails, of course, just looks a bit ugly.
I always get hiking boots a size larger to accomodate thick socks and swelling feet. This time I got them a size wider too. They feel great! I'll finish breaking them in in Colorado next month.

Hi Mary,
I walked in Vasques, and I have a word of advise for you. When U are walking DOWN the mountains, be sure that your boots are laced very tightly along the lower grommets - closer to the toes. This will keep your toes away from piledriving into the front of the boots on those downmarches. I failed to lace my boots properly, and I lost 4 toenails. But thats OK, because they came off after I returned home. They are relics from Pilgrim Paul's Great Journey to the Tomb of St. James.

So, I now have Vasques w/ Gortex and a nice wide toe box.
Will walk on them for the next four weeks to break them in, but they feel much
better than the first pair. Except for walking, I feel ready as I can be for
this journey. My concern is blisters slowing me down since I have only 28
days, and will begin at Roncevalles. I really just want to get started!
