How To Get To St. Jean Pied du Port?

I am leaving for Madrid on May 13 and trying to start the Camino from St.
Jean Pied du Port once I get there.  Can anyone help me with info on how to
best get to St. Jean from Madrid?

Also, I have a question as to whether I should have any concerns as I leave
my backpack at the refugios to go see the history or out to eat.  I am
traveling by myself (63 and recently retired).  Any  other tips gratefully
accepted.  Thanks.
