Laurie,
We found these guides and articles important in addition to the
Confraternity guide: (it is sometimes easy to get lost on this route):
1.  Sentier de Saint-Jacques: GR 65 (Le Puy-en-Velay-Conques) 200km;
Variante GR 65 A 20 km. Paris: Federation Francaise de la Randonnee
Pedestre.. Series: Topo-guide des sentiers de randonnee, Ref. 621.
This guide and it's companions, Nos. 617 (Conques-Cahors) and no. 613
(Cahors-Roncevaux) are available in Paris from the bookstore of the Institut
Geographique National at 107 Rue La Boetie (75008), Metro Franklin
Roosevelt. Phone: 43.98.85.00.
I believe that I saw copies of the local area topo-guides on sale in Le Puy
at the tourist office and also at Conques, but I wouldn't count on it.They
are indispensable!
The IGN also sells the IGN maps, Series Vertes 1:100000 (1 cm for 1 km), of
which you need No. 50 (St-Etinne le puy-en-velay), No. 58, No 57, and either
63 or 64, I'm not sure. The IGN maps, but not the Guides, are available in
U.S. from: Distant Lands, Pasadena, CA. www.distantlands.com/

Extremely useful for finding accomodation and services along the way:
"Saint Jacques de Compostelle: randonnee au depart du Puy en Velay (Haute
Loire); GR 65 informations pratiques entre Le Puy-En-Velay et Conques." This
is available, supposedly, from the FFRP mentioned above; we bought our copy
in Le Puy at the:
Comite Departemental de la Randonnee Haute Loire, 12 bd. Phillippe Jourde,
Le Puy en Velay. Tel: 71 05 56 50.
It's a little paper pamphlet, very cheap, worth more than it's weight in
gold.
Herb McGrew's delightful articles in Gourmet Magazine, still inspirational
although out of date for accommodations, were in the issues of:
September 1990
May 1991
August 1992
October 1993.
