Those that do want something like rain pants might consider rain chaps as an
alternative. They are better than pants for two reasons.  There is less material,
so they weigh less. They are open at the top, so they do not trap the moisture from
sweat nearly as much as rain pants do. In my own experience, rain pants were a
hopeless nuisance and the rain chaps worked very well. I also tried just zipping
off the legs of my convertible pants, but the sight of ancient, bare legs sticking
out from under my poncho seemed to be rather unnerving to the Iberians.
