This poem is a medieval cantiga de amigos [literally, friend's song] in
Gallego, which was spoken in nw Spain in the Middle Ages. This is the language
the great 13th-century king (of Castilla y Leon, which then included Galicia)
Alfonso X el Sabio [the wise] used when he composed his huge collection of
lyrics [called cantigas] praising the Virgin Mary. This specific poem is often
quoted when talking about pilgrimage literature of the middle ages.
