G'day Leonard
Not sure if you were semi serious, so ... Ancient people built the giant
stone cairns/piles, no-one knows why, but the Romans noted them and assumed
they were associated with the pagan pilgrimage. The idea of walking across N
Spain to Finisterre predated the Romans and Christianity. The walkers were
following the Milky Way to the ends of the earth.
The bones identified as those of the Saint were discovered in the 8th C. Our
Camino came after Santiago was established.
So there you have it. More questions than answers lurk therin.
All the best
John
