So, as St. James trekked his way back east toward the holy land, he was
walking at night and got a thorn in his foot near the town of Lleida / Lerida.
Since it was dark he couldn't see -- so one version of this legend is that the
Virgin Mary sent some angels down with lights (torches) so he could see to get
the thorn out.
Thus was born the popular pilgrimage festival parade of fanalets in Lleida
every 24 July.
The church has a small chapel of St. Mary and a tower of Sant Jaume (Santiago)
which commemorate the legend.
