Patricia,

 From what I have read, knowing Spanish is nice, but not manditory.  If you
really want to get into it and if there is a community college near you,
check and see if they offer any beginning conversational spanish classes. I
have taken a little, and was amazed at how quickly I was able to understand
conversations I overheard when at the store or mall.
