Things dissappeared from the refugio in Santiago while we
were there also. Whole backpacks came up missing on a
couple occasions. Seems to be a pattern there, probably
just one misguided soul who preys on innocent pilgrims.

Such is life...

Elsewhere I heard of no problems.
