Dear all,
May of the origins of St James are obscure and ways and manners may have
intertwined during the ages.
The pilgrimage to Compostelle was not only a pilgrimage, but also a clerical
punishment and later even by the worldly authorities adopted.

In order to have "proof" of their being in Santiago, criminals and pilgrims
alike took a souvenir of the scallop shell back home, as they were readily
available on the beaches of Galicia then.
Another story relates how a knight at Mont St,Michel on his way to Santiago
crossed the waters on his horse, when he was taken by the tide. He was to be
drowned and called upon St.james to come to his rescue. All of a sudden a
bridge of white scallop shells appeared out of the water.
The third one which originates more to the story of St James, was that the
stone coffin was found at the beaches of Padron covered by scallop shells.
as always
Ultreaya and Good Health to you !
