Ginny, did you mean refugios (cheap, often municipal accommodation) or
hostals (always private, you pay more but are still cheap)?
If refugios, they are signposted at the end of the fleches (yellow arrows),
and you can't book ahead.
If hostals, they are plentiful in most centres. Even in small villages there
are often people who open their homes to travellers. Ask for "habitation" as
they don't use the word "accommodation". I went in late spring and while I
often had to try several places, I always succeeded in finding a place to
stay.
To book ahead you or a friendly person would need to speak the language.
