I was paranoid, too. A helpful commuter in Barcelona told me to lock the
zips on my daypack when travelling by train, for instance. After being on
the road a few days I realised I had nothing to fear from my fellow
pilgrims. Nevertheless I remained careful in large cities, and especially so
in Compostela.
This does not mean that other people's experience will mirror my own, but
the sense of purpose among pilgrims was most evident to me, and I felt safe
in their company.
