>

Anyone who has been to the lighthouse at land's end in Fisterra (Finisterra) recently has probably been puzzled by the strange concrete structures on the steep cliff just below the road. We speculated they were radar installations or perhaps coastal fortifications when walking the road last autumn. The mystery is resolved in the current issue of Progressive Architecture with the structures pictured on its cover: they are burial chambers for the local cemetery. The story, with pictures, is worth a glance.

>
On a similar photographic note, yesterday I discovered a wonderful book of photographs showing sites along the traditional camino routes in France and Spain. Compiled in the early 1960s, before the Camino again became a popular pilgrimage route and before France and especially Spain became rich, the photos are historical documents as well as a record of scenes along the Camino. The book was originally published in Germany, and if you have a good library nearby I recommend looking it up.
