Air travel w/ backpacks

When I bought my pack, several of the guys that worked there suggested that
I get a "bag" for it.
Their reasoning (from experience) was that when flying, a pack is a sign
for:
ALL MY BELONGINGS ARE IN HERE!!!
i.e.- easy to steal from.
I even found one pack that had a sack built into it that would cover it just
for flying- or whatever the traveling mode might be.

I plan on buying a cheap bag to send it in and worry about the way home at
that time.
Also I want all the straps confined too, so for me a cheap nylon sack does
the trick.
