helpful book/guide

Welcome, Constantine

There are 2 English language guides you could carry
with you.

One, my highest recommendation, is published by the
British Confraternity of St. James. It is accurate,
up-to-date and lightweight. I disagree with Michael
about a guide not being worth the weight. This one, I
believe, is. You certainly don't need a guide to keep
from getting lost - the Camino Frances is very well
way-marked. But the information on all the refugio
options including the lesser known ones, alternate and
off-road route options, kilometers between villages,
where one can find pharmacies, stores, bars, banks,
etc. - all this was invaluable to me. If I had just
followed the yellow arrows, I would have missed a
number of superb, beautiful off-track walking days and
homey, minor refugios. Visit the CSJ website - it has
wonderful info, and if you wish, you can order the
guide from their online bookshop:

The other English language option is Lozano's book
guide and map-set. The book is too heavy to take with
you, but the map-set is pretty good. You can order it
at the following site:

Good pre-Camino reading (not for the backpack):

The Pilgrim's Guide to Santiago De Compostela
by William Melczer

The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago : The Complete
Cultural Handbook
by Linda Kay Davidson, David M. Gitlitz

El Camino : Walking to Santiago De Compostela (Penn
State Series in Lived Religious Experience)
by Lee Hoinacki

Good luck,
Adrienne
