A recent reference to the Golite Breeze included this comment: 'There
is no hip belt, its also worth loading it up and doing several hikes if
only to get past the pain in the shoulder stage.'
It is BECAUSE there is no hip belt that there will be pain in the
shoulders.
Proper backpacks with hip belts should not cause pain in the shoulders
because much of the weight of the pack is carried on the hips.
The Golite is the brainchild of ultralight backpacking guru Ray Jardine.
Some of his ideas about lightweight backpacking are worthwhile. Others
border on being plain silly.
The ultralightweight backpacking debate often finds itself mired in
hair-splitting about how to save two thirds of three fifths of five
eighths of an ounce by cutting the label out of a shirt.
Anybody carrying about 15 kilos in a backpack which does not have a hip
belt deserves the painful shoulders that he/she will surely develop.
Get a proper backpack and leave the ultralight stuff to the zealots.
