Days to walk Camino

Everybody is going to have a different answer on how may
days to walk the camino. Note that the total distance
is around 750 km, about 500 miles. I suggest that you
not plan to average more than 20 to 25 km per day,
unless you have experience walking long distances, and
know that you are comfortable walking more than that. I
am just finishing up 300 km, and my average pace has
turned out to be 20 km per day. 750 km at 20 km per day
is 37 days on the trail, plus travel time and days in
Santiago. A faster pace than your body can really handle
leads to injuries, exhaustion, and failure. I have seen
a lot of people with feet in disasterous shape, visits
to emergency rooms, etc. Some people can exceed 30 km
without problems, but the average person is just setting
themselves up for problems and failure to plan in
advance to go that far. Plan to go 20 or 25 km per day,
and then have a backup plan for what you want to do if
you get to Santiago early.

A tight schedule leads to stress and aggravation, and
might cost you an opportunity to do something
worthwhile. One of the highlights of my trip was the
day that I did not go anywhere, I spent two nights in
Astoga to see the Palm Sunday processions. I could not
have done that on a tight schedule.
