I'll give myself permission to write about this here
just once more:

The answer to that question is, many many many times.

How many tyrants have we gladly supported in Latin
America so American business can make a few more
bucks? How many despots did we formerly prop up in the
Middle East for the same reasons? How many mothers who
toil in the maquiladoras in the so-called "free trade
zone" in Mexico pass out from heat and hunger and
can't earn enough to buy milk for their children (ask
the American journalists who reported on this a couple
of years back)? How many other workers around the
developing world labor for 17 cents an hour (sometimes
a day) so some venerated American clothing label can
sell their still-outrageously expensive creations for
just a few dollars cheaper? How many more fathers in
the Middle East have to try to shield their children
from point-blank gunfire that we purchased to satisfy
political desires back home? ... and speaking of back
home, how many more mentally retarded men does Texas
plan to execute?

Other examples could fill 20 more pages of e-mail. No,
we're not totally responsible. The rest of the
industrialized world could answer to this, too. But we
are the leaders of it all.

The events of Sept. 11 are horrendous and the
perpetrators need to be swiftly brought to justice,
for as I said before, there is no justification in the
world for their barbaric actions. And in this time of
pain when we're in desperate need of support, I'm
saddened by the words of a few people on the Spanish
listserv. But if there's ever a time when the words
"root causes" come to mind, this is it.

I apologize for this on this listserve, but I'm trying
to learn to think like a pilgrim. And telling the
truth is one way I can think of.

Regards,
Ana
