Hello..
If you start in Leon you should have a good hike and make it in two weeks
with still time to take a day in Leon and visit other sites along the way.
According to the Lozano book this looks quite do-able..esp. for you of the
younger set!!
After arriving in Santiago and getting the compestelo (certificate from the
Pilgrim office) you can take that to IBERIA airline office and they will
give you a 1/2 price air ticket to Madrid... about 60$. (inexp. bus ride to
the airport) Takes an hour to get to Madrid, and then the metro to Sol
(center) is very easy and inexpensive. Lots of little (one floor) hostels
right in that area.
I wanted to, but didnt' go to Avila... Would have taken an arranged tour
from a tourist office, or just taken the bus there and done it on my own.
I agree with others that busses are great. I didn't try the train, but the
schedules were daunting (deadly, maybe). I took the train from Bilbao to
Pamplona... fast, comfortable, etc. Check them before the trains.
So long as you walk the last 100 km. you are 'eligible' to get the
Compestelo in Santiago... :-)..
enjoy... there is no other possibility.
