i just got a nice letter from John Watson, and have been enoying his
website www.pilgrimonline.net

i was taken with his take on "motives"...lots of fascinating thoughts
about why people undertake the camino. Funny, when we started the
camino that seemed to be a regular topic of conversation, but after a
few days, no one seemed to ask anymore. it was just what we were
doing.

Robert Sibley (in his delightful series on the camino for the Ottawa
Citizen last year), quotes TS Eliot, who says it all for me (I still
haven't found out why I did the camino!)

"And what you thought you came for
Is only a shell, a husk of meaning
From which the purpose breaks only when it is fulfilled
If at all. Either you had no purpose
Or the purpose is beyond the end you figured
And is altered in fulfilment."
