Hi Bill,

I can only comment on the two first of your last minute Q's.

1. A hotel/name recommendation in St Jean.

Why don't you stay at the refugio? The pilgrim's office, Acceuil Saint Jacques, is at 39, Rue de la Citadelle (Tel: 05.59.37.05.09), and the refugio is a few blocks up the same street in nr. 55. There is a fountain looking like a hydrant outside the door and beside it there is a little plastic bowl that is being filled regularly so the dogs of the street can drink too.
The refuge is run by Mme Janine Curutchet. Be careful nor to refer to her as French - she is BASQUE! (and very sweet!)
(Tel: 05.59.37.21.72) Open all year. Price: 25 Francs.

Some other addresses, that I do not know personally - only saved the information from old mails:

Gite d'Etape. M. Etchegoin. 9, Route de Bayonneá Uhart Cize.
(Tel: 05. 59. 37. 12. 08). They have 12 beds. Open all year.

M. Aphessetché privé (Tel: 05.59.37.17.94.) 60 francs.

M. Camino privé (Tel: 05.59.37.05.83. 60) francs.

Mme. Clery (Tel: 05.59.37.12.03. 60) francs.

2. How much weight did people lose on the trip?

I walked 9 days from St. Jean to Burgos last year, 270 kilometres - an average of 30 kms per day, lost 5 kilos.
But I've heard of a peregrina who gained weight!

I wish you a nice camino!

Frans.
