Hi Terry, and welcome to the list! It's great that
you're doing the Camino as a second-time pilgrim.
That's what I'm planning to do, too, in the fall of
2001. I walked for the first time in July-August of
2000, but I had to take a bus a few times within that
period because of illness/injury, but I'm planning to
be better prepared physically this time. I didn't take a bus to Roncesvalles
but I did go to
Pamplona. A friend met me there and I stayed with him
for the night, then the next day he drove me into
Roncesvalles. There I got my Credencial and bordon,
attended the mass, had the pilgrim dinner and started
the next morning. Lovely! I don7t think a bus goes
from Madrid to Roncesvalles but there is a daily bus
from Pamplona to Roncesvalles. I think it leaves at 6
p.m. every day except holidays, and gets you there in
time for the mass. I don't know anything about St.
Jean but many other list members here do. Once again, welcome to a
second-time pilgrim!
Saludos,
Ana __________________________________________________

Sure, both the Spanish (www.renfe.es) and French (www.sncf.com)
national systems have websites. RENFE only offers information, but SNCF
appears to allow reservations and advanced purchase. The only bus system
in Spain I know about is ALSA, which has a website www.alsa.es with
route information.

Hi Delphia,
the bus to Roncesvalles leaves (from the bus station, in the center of the
City) at 6:00 p.m. The ride takes about 45 minutes and it arrives in time
for the pilgrims to receive the credential, look around a little bit, and
attend the Pilgrims' blessing at 8:00 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays the
departure of the bus and the service take place two hours earlier; they are
timed to coincide.
Best regards,
Rosina
Delphia again,
Arriving in Pamplona at 4:00 on a Saturday probably will not allow you to
take the Pilgrims' bus. You can, however, take a taxi from the train
station
to Roncesvalles.. it will cost you twenty dollars or so, and it will get you
to Roncesvalles in plenty of time to get the credential, attend the
blessing,
and arrange to stay at the Roncesvalles albergue which is quite ample.
Best regards,
Rosina

Pamplona. I landed in Madrid from New York at 1:30
p.m., got money out of the bank machine right at the
airport, bought a train ticket right there at the
counter, proceeded directly to the Metro (you can do
that now underground from Barajas Airport) and went to
Chamartin Station where I got the train out at 5 p.m.
I arrived in Pamplona at 9:30 p.m. Saludos,
Ana

There is a wonderful map of the Madrid Metro available on the internet
(don't have URl bookmarked on the machine I am writing this from but can get
it if you can't find it.
