Rosina & all--
We've gone down this path before on another list, and I don't want to
unleash a torrent of hate-mail regarding Stgo pilgrim vs. Stgo "Matamoros"
("Moorslayer")...but for those truly interested in the history of St. James
in the New World, you may be interested in the following:

Contreras y Lopez de Ayala, Juan, Marques de Lozoya. "De Santiago peregrino
a Santiago matamoros" in Cuadernos hispanoamericanos, 238-240 (Oct-Dec 1969)
pp. 399-405.

Valle, Rafael Heliodoro. "Santiago en la imaginacion de America." Cuadernos
americanos. Year 4, 20.2 (Mar-Apr 1945): 150-67.
Interesting because he lists 13 appearances of the Saint in the Americas
through the 19th century, among other things.

Simmons, Marc. "Santiago: Reality and Myth" in Santiago: Saint of Two
Worlds. Ed. Joan Myers. Albuquerque: U. of New Mexico Press, 1991. Excerpt
as "Santiago: The saint of conquest" w/ color illus in: New Mexico Magazine
70.1 (Jan. 1992) 24-31.
If I remember correctly one of the articles shows Stgo on Gov. Onate's
coat-of arms; describes his appearance at the battle of Acoma (in New
Mexico) in 1598.
