On Italian and learning the language !

How different is Galego from Spanish?  Is it helpful to have some knowledge
of both languages?  It seems to have more similarity to French- does any one
know if this is true?
Funny about someone speaking Italian and wishing to be understood, I am the
same way- speaking French wherever I go, just because it is not english, it
automatically comes into my head when I travel, even in Italy!
