The ATMs are the way to go on the Camino. Traveler's
checques are not advisable as they are hard to change
in rural areas. Some pilgrims, however, choose to
bring them for insurance. Probably a good idea, but
you won't need much. Just a little in case of
emergencies. But know that you will most likely need
to change them in Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, Leon...
and not the little towns.
