Actually, this is not totally true: children raised in the Catholic Church receive First Communion relatively young (second grade in the US) but nowadays are not confirmed until they are in secondary school, leaving an 8- or 9-year gap between the two experiences during which they continue to receive communion.  Confirmation in Catholic doctrine is the completion and fulfillment of the spiritual process begun by baptism, but it is not required for celebration of the Eucharist.

Just a clarification, no contentious intended ...
