Mary Ann:
I've read quite a few messages emphasizing the need to "get in shape".
Although such preparation is commendable, its applicability may vary
according to the particular pilgrim.
I walked the Camino last Aug.-Sept. and my entire preparation consisted of
walking from my apt. in Greenwich Village in New York City to Lincoln Center
twice (a distance of about four miles). One of those times I went right into
the Ballet with my walking shoes, which attracted a fair deal of
(disapproving) looks in that particular setting.
Like the English actress Glenda Jackson. I am sort of allergic to exercise,
and, as she has repeatedly recommended, when the thought of exercising comes
upon me I lie down until it passes.
Yet, in the Camino I had no difficulties whatever except for the very first
night during which my legs hurt a lot. I outwalked and outlasted a great
many of the pilgrims I met, although most of them were much younger (I am 60
years old) and bigger, I am 5 feet tall and weigh 100 pounds).
What I did do was follow the dietary advice given to me by the pharmacists in
Spain: eat a banana at least once a day, do not drink water unles you are
thirsty, eat light and avoid meat.
As to the blisters, a group of young Brazilian pilgrims told me that coating
the feet with Vicks Vaporub a few times a day would avoid blisters. And
indeed, such was the case with me.
If you would like some more detailed information about my own experiences
e-mail me directly and I shall be delighted to share them with you.

Have a very happy New Year!

Rosina
